How to Get to Kyiv in 2026

How to Get to Kyiv in 2026: A Practical Guide for International Travellers

Always double-check the schedule before travel. Allow extra time for border checks.

▶  Slovakia / Hungary

Via Slovakia or Hungary — good if you fly to Budapest or Bratislava.

  1. Fly to Budapest or Bratislava / Košice.
  2. Train to the Ukrainian border:
    • From Budapest: trains run to Chop or Mukachevo in western Ukraine.
    • From Bratislava: connect via Košice → Chop / Mukachevo.

  1. Fly to Bucharest, Iaši (Romania) or Chišinóu (Moldova).
  2. From Bucharest:
    • Train to Ungheni (Moldovan border) → Chišinóu → international Chišinóu–Kyiv train.

Step 1 — Before You Travel: Documents and Basics

  • No flights to Ukraine. You will first fly to a neighbouring country — usually Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova — then continue overland into Ukraine.
  • Check entry rules. Make sure you meet visa requirements for the EU/Schengen area and for Ukraine, and that your passport is valid for at least 6 months.
  • Travel insurance. We strongly recommend insurance that covers war-related risks and medical assistance in Ukraine.
  • Allow extra time. Security checks and possible queues at the border mean you should keep your schedule flexible and avoid tight same-day connections.

Step 2 — Choose Your Route

Route A — Via Poland (Warsaw, Kraków, Przemyšl, Chełm)

Poland is the simplest and most comfortable gateway to Kyiv for most international travellers: many flights, good rail connections and frequent buses every day.

1) Warsaw → Kyiv: direct overnight train

  • Board the international overnight train from Warszawa Wschodnia to Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi (Kyiv main station), operated by Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia).
  • Typical pattern: evening departure from Warsaw, arrival in Kyiv late next morning. Return train leaves Kyiv in the evening and arrives in Warsaw next morning.
  • Journey time: approximately 14–16 hours.
  • Check timetable and buy tickets: uz.gov.ua

2) Warsaw → Kyiv: direct bus

  • Many buses depart daily from Warsaw West Bus Station (Dworzec Zachodni) to Kyiv (Central Bus Station or Vydubychi).
  • Journey time: about 11–16 hours depending on carrier and border traffic.
  • Search and book on: FlixBus  |  InfoBus  |  Omio

3) Other Polish hubs closer to the border

  • Przemyšl — a key rail gateway; several daily trains connect here with Lviv, Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
  • Chełm — served by the Kyiv–Chełm international train; easy to reach from Warsaw or Lublin by Polish domestic train.
  • Kraków, Lublin, Rzeszów — many daily buses to Lviv and Kyiv; useful if you find cheaper or more direct flights there.

Route B — Via Slovakia or Hungary (Bratislava, Budapest, Košice)

If flights to Budapest or Bratislava are more convenient or affordable, there are good rail connections from Central Europe to western Ukraine and then onward to Kyiv.

  • From Budapest: take a train to Chop or Mukachevo on the Ukrainian border, then board a Ukrainian Railways train to Kyiv. Timetable: uz.gov.ua
  • From Bratislava: travel by train via Košice → Chop / Mukachevo, then connect to a Kyiv train.
  • Combined international routes (e.g. Bratislava–Kyiv): Tickets.ua.

Route C — Via Romania or Moldova (Bucharest, Iaši, Chišinóu)

For travellers from the Balkans or Southern Europe, entering via Romania or Moldova can be more practical.

  • From Bucharest: take a train to the Moldovan border (Ungheni), then connect to the international Chišinóu–Kyiv train. Alternatively, long-distance buses Bucharest–Kyiv (~18 h): InfoBus.
  • From Iaši: cross the border at Ungheni → Chišinóu → board the Kyiv train.
  • From Chišinóu: international train or bus to Kyiv. Timetable: uz.gov.ua

Step 3 — Booking Platforms

Practical Tips for Your Journey

  • Always double-check schedules shortly before travel — international timetables can change at short notice.
  • Arrive at the station early. Allow extra time in Warsaw, Budapest or other hubs to find the correct platform and pass security checks.
  • Prepare for border controls. Keep passport, tickets and booking confirmations ready; be patient during passport and customs checks.
  • Have some cash. While cards work in most places, it helps to have Polish złoty, euros or Ukrainian hryvnia for snacks and minor expenses en route.
  • Book in advance. Night trains and popular weekend buses sell out; earlier booking often means better prices and better seats.
